Consumerism Might Not Save Health Care

In January's State of the Union address, President George W. Bush called for expanding health savings accounts (HSAs) to curb rising health care costs. HSAs are tax-favored health care-dedicated savings accounts that patients control.

These devices provide comprehensive coverage when combined with out-of-pocket requirements and high-deductible health plans (HDHPs).

Federal 2006 HDHP family coverage guidelines call for deductibles of at least $2,100, with maximum out-of-pocket expenses of $10,500. President Bush also proposed tax changes that would give individuals the same advantages employers already enjoy when they buy health insurance.
